THAO – Nguyen Nguyen Lose Lose
A spinning maple seed becomes the saddest picture of forever in THAO’s “Nguyen Nguyen Lose Lose”, a song aimed straight at her estranged father. She casts herself as his satellite, a thin echo of the way he moves, and refuses to fade out the way he has; out at sea she’s flagging down anything that might stop her drifting, and admits she can’t trail him into the dark, partly for her own sake, partly because he never wanted her to. The ending lands on a strange, gentle truce: if there are more lives after this one, maybe that’s where the unfinished business gets settled. Her own hip hop-leaning beat, a rapped flow and Adrian Quesada of Black Pumas on guitar keep it low and stripped back, closer to hushed trip hop than anything she’s put out before. From Show Me, her first album in six years, out October 30 on Kill Rock Stars.
