Queens of the Stone Age – Run Away From the Mob
For two minutes and 45 seconds, “Run Away From the Mob” barely raises its voice: guitar, drums, very little else, and Josh Homme in falsetto. Then the drums and guitars come crashing in for the final minute. The structure is the whole point. “It’s a letter,” Homme says. “A last one, addressed to an oldest son, ‘if you’re reading this, everything went wrong, and here’s what you have to do’. The end is the sound of a father standing behind his son.” The quiet stretch is the instructions, and the noise is the backup arriving, a promise that he’ll still be there whatever happens. He first recorded it in 2013 with Dave Grohl on drums and only finished it now, because, in his words, “I wasn’t qualified to finish them, yet.” After the loose, mistakes-left-in Easy Street (W29), it closes ninth album Perfecth, out tomorrow October 30 on Matador Records.
