Kevin Morby – Nursery Rhyme feat. Lonnie Holley
Some songs shouldn’t pop up on an autoplay queue, and Kevin Morby “Nursery Rhyme” is one of them. He calls it “far and away the darkest and most violent song I’ve ever written”, and it deals with gun violence against children, so it lives only on Bandcamp, where you have to go looking for it.
It’s pay what you want, and every cent goes to Everytown for Gun Safety. Six minutes long, a swirling march cut at Sam Cohen’s studio with French band Petite-Vallée as the backing band and Cochemea Gastelum adding saxophone, it plays as a much bleaker sequel to his 2016 protest song “Beautiful Strangers”. Written by someone who has since become a father. Then Morby’s voice cuts out and Lonnie Holley closes the song with spoken word, the one stretch of hope in it.
Go to it purposely, and pay something.
