Lady Overdrive – I Am Bird
A wingless bird sits on its perch, watching everything below and pressing down on whomever it picks. That’s the protagonist of “I Am Bird”, the first single from Lady Overdrive, the new alter ego of Amsterdam artist Una Jongenelis, who calls the project a way of singing about her grandmother’s demons and her own. The song puts you on the receiving end, and the bird isn’t alone: it brings a friend along to watch people squirm. Read alongside her line about inherited demons, the bird looks like a weight handed down from one generation to the next, the kind that sits on a family for decades. Then it overreaches. Its wings catch fire from the effort, it gets tired, and it drops to the ground without a sound, more Icarus than predator. Folk-punk with a fairy-tale streak, out now on AT EASE.
