Caroline Strickland – Forgiver

A beach at dawn near the end of Robert Altman’s The Long Goodbye: everyone a little drunk, cops milling about, and Marlowe working out what the woman beside him knew all along. Caroline Strickland built both verses of “Forgiver” out of that moment. The other person’s tears don’t work any more, because once you’ve seen the whole picture, forgiving stops being an option, and love isn’t going to fix it. She wrote it at Big Sur, alone, strumming an electric guitar and it starts close to that: a quiet vocal over guitar strums echoing into empty space. Then the drums come in, the guitars start to churn, and by the end she’s riding jagged guitars and crashing drums with a howl in her voice. Her summary is “a song about punishment and anger, about force and California.” Debut album Super Tender follows November 13 on Born Losers Records.
