SAMPA THE GREAT – LOCATION
Does where you’re born decide how far you’re allowed to go? Sampa The Great puts the question bluntly on “LOCATION”, the Cadenza-produced third preview of Nu Zamrock. Over taut rock guitars and a hard-hitting arrangement, she lays out the contradiction: African music shaping sounds everywhere while the people making it get none of the infrastructure, ownership, or pay that the West takes for granted. Then she flips the map, putting herself in Ghana to work, writing, dancing and leading from the places the industry treats as an afterthought. Sampa calls it a song about the cost of creating outside the West, and her vocal cuts straight through every line. Nu Zamrock, the album built on her uncle’s Zamrock legacy, lands October 30 on Loma Vista Recordings.
SIMON SAYS (W37) went after an industry obsessed with counting numbers; “LOCATION” follows the money all the way to the map, and lands even harder.
