Friedberg – Goodwife
A woman keeps chanting how dutiful she’s been, always at his side, until the boast starts to sound like a cage. Anna Friedberg wrote “Goodwife” for her grandmother, a sharp, poetry-loving reader who spent most of her life in an abusive marriage to a man who couldn’t stand her having a world of her own. The song hands her a rewrite: his photos plastered everywhere, her voice outsourced to him, a self half made-up on his say-so, then belief finally running dry. The new ending is about walking away from codependency and being good to herself for once. Underneath it all is pure dancefloor. Anna co-produced with Daniel Brandt and Hot Chip’s Al Doyle and Joe Goddard in their Shoreditch studio, there’s a cheeky wink to Inner City’s “Good Life”, and the groove won’t let go. Title track of Friedberg’s second album, out April 9, 2027 on Clouds Hill.
