Marta Del Grandi – Antarctica
Italian singer-songwriter Marta Del Grandi shares “Antarctica”, the first single from her album Dream Life, out January 30th on Fire Records. It’s her third release with the London label, following 2023’s Selva, which was a finalist for the 2024 Tenco Prize in the “First Work” category.
“Antarctica” came together during a late evening solo session, when a melody Del Grandi had been carrying around for days clicked into place over a sequencer. The track addresses climate and social injustice through a funky riff that nods to Talking Heads, with vocal phrasing that recalls Laurie Anderson’s abstract approach. Where Selva felt bucolic and painterly, Dream Life takes a more contemporary angle with defined pop production and lyrics tackling political and social issues head-on.
The upcoming album will explore the boundary between dream and reality across ten tracks. Del Grandi describes it as more like a photobook than an oil painting, detailed and immediate rather than impressionistic. The songs reflect growing awareness that we can’t fully control the future or how our plans turn out. That thread runs through the record, giving it a lightness and serene disillusionment.
