Westside Cowboy – Don’t Throw Rocks

Manchester quartet Westside Cowboy share “Don’t Throw Rocks”, the lead single from their second EP So Much Country ‘Till We Get There, out January 16th. The band signed to Island Records imprint Adventure Recordings after releasing their debut EP This Better Be Something Great in August. The new EP was recorded in New York with producer Loren Humphrey, who’s worked with Arctic Monkeys, Lana Del Rey, and Cameron Winter.

The track started as a fuzzy drum machine demo Jimmy Bradbury made at home. When they brought it to the practice room before their first Castle Hotel headline show, they tried it fast and loud with a New Order-style disco beat. Nobody was convinced. Just before scrapping it, they shifted the emphasis from snare and hi-hats to floor tom and rim shots. That changed everything. Instead of a two-minute foghorn blast, the song now builds and rumbles with momentum. Jimmy’s lyrics deal with time and change moving beyond our control, and the band wanted the music to match that feeling.

The band came together when Bradbury, working at a music shop and reading Billy Bragg’s book on skiffle history, asked the others to start a group. They’re part of the No Band Is An Island initiative, organizing collectively to raise funds and make a difference beyond just playing shows. The band wants to make music for everyone, not just people in cool cities with good record stores.

They’re currently supporting Black Country, New Road across Europe through October, then headline UK and Ireland dates in November and January, including their biggest show yet at London’s Scala. They’ve also added two US dates in December at New York’s Night Club 101 and LA’s Scribble.
