The Nightingales – Hand Me My Backside
Back seat of a bus, world falling apart outside the window, and a man ready to give up on all of it. Rob Lloyd sings from inside that head over hard post-punk rhythm and dissonant chords, while strings build the kind of tension usually reserved for a noir soundtrack. Halfway through, Frith Kitson and Natalie Mason cut in with a wailing, siren-like harmony that knocks his reasoning sideways, and the violins and cellos spiral into a climax straight out of a Hitchcock score. All of it in under three minutes. The title twists the slang for getting thoroughly beaten, which suits a song this sure the defeat has already happened.
“Hand Me My Backside” is out, the follow-up to 2025’s The Awful Truth.
