Gotts Street Park, Pip Millett – Flowers
Not much happens on “Flowers”, and that’s where it gets its pull. A simple bass line and some piano sit underneath, then Pip Millett’s voice comes in plain and unforced over a chord progression that rolls along without rushes. Gotts Street Park hold back at every point where another band would push, and all the room goes to Millett.
The first verse stays in a bedroom: a hand pulling at the blind, a duvet nobody wants to leave, days lost to sleep. Then comes the walk outside and the thanks owed to the person who stayed. The chorus turns rain into the reason anything grows, and it works because the verses earned it. The song began as a loose groove at Chairworks, a studio outside Leeds, during a session for Millett’s own album, and the trio kept playing one section for something like half an hour because they couldn’t stop. Easy to hear why. Millett has been here before, on “Got To Be Good” and “Change My Ways”, and “Flowers” is the latest preview of “Somewhere Between”, out 16 October on PIAS. Slow, warm and sure of itself: if the rest of the album sounds like this, October is sorted.
