Why Horses? – Cat’s Cradle

Is there really no purpose to any of this? That’s the question “Cat’s Cradle” keeps circling back to, and Why Horses? never quite let it settle. Gabriel Austin Lester wrote it after reading Kurt Vonnegut’s novel of the same name, an absurdist book he loved while rejecting its whole premise: raised Christian, he’s held on to the idea that everything has a purpose, and the song sits inside the discomfort of that belief wobbling. It’s the second single from “These Hands”, the Cardiff quintet’s four-track EP, out 16 October via Brace Yourself Records.

Lester pushes his vocal toward something unstable on purpose, like the ground under the song is shifting as he sings. This is a band willing to sound uncertain about its convictions and honestly doubt suits them.
