untitled (halo) – easy rider
What does a closing track owe the songs before it? For untitled (halo), the answer on “easy rider” is a plain guitar riff, a long jam and a last stretch where all four members sing together, repeating lines from earlier in the song. Ariana Mamnoon calls it a summation of the previous tracks, and it sounds like one: a fuzzy, jangling classic rock song with gang vocals, a deep baritone muttering underneath and her harmonies on top.
The words come from one direction: a narrator who keeps insisting on devotion while watching someone pretend to be fine, hollow-eyed and steering by whatever their phone says. The bet gets placed from the outside, and the group chant keeps the devotion going until it sounds like a way of coping. The band directed the video themselves, playing the song in an empty office under strobes. It follows aimee lou wood freestyle (W35) and closes their self-titled debut, out 6 November on Dirty Hit, written over a year at their Glassell Park studio.
