Jasper Llewellyn – For the Teacher
Jasper Llewellyn has spent his career as one voice in “caroline”, the London octet whose caroline 2 landed near the top of a lot of best-of lists last year. “For the Teacher” is his first release under his name, out now via Rough Trade, and it takes its time: seven minutes, meditative, built to sit with rather than skim through.
Llewellyn says the song came together in pieces over more than five years, with “ideals; how we grasp for them; how they remain beyond us” the common thread running through all of it. The first two minutes, cut from the radio edit, use text from a forthcoming book-length poem by his Buddhist teacher, Maitreyabandhu, itself written as a eulogy for Maitreyabandhu’s own teacher, Bhante Sangharakshita. The title covers both of them.
