Kate Bollinger – Shop Girl

Kate Bollinger created a full-on fictional world for her upcoming EP and the title track/first single “Shop Girl” gives you the keys to this world. The title track/single will be released on October 2, via Ghostly International.

The songwriter from Richmond has been releasing single and EP’s over several years until her first LP, Songs From A Thousand Frames Of Mind, came out in 2024. Shop Girl is a return by the singer-songwriter and it includes 5 tracks that she describes as “songs from an imagined musical” and all but one track was written with long time collaborator Matthew E. White.

The song was produced by Jonathan Rado. He played all the instruments (bass, piano, guitar, synths, drum machine and percussive elements) while Sam France worked on the keyboards and Tim Bernardes added some bass parts. The engineer for the record is Daniel McNeill. Paul Cherry helped do additional recording work. Overall, the end product has a bit of that “warm” 60’s pop feel, but also includes enough “disco glitter” to make you want to move. It makes an ordinary daily task such as stocking shelves seem a lot brighter than it actually is. I never thought a song about re-stocking store shelves would have a hook that was so good…but now it does.
