Lamplight – Clover
Somewhere in the second song on Lamplight’s next record, Ian Williams sings about savouring something sweet instead of rushing through it, and that image ended up as the album’s title: Lick The Spoon, Let It Soften. “Clover”, the song that produced it, is out now as the lead single, alongside a slower alternate take called “Clover (Slow)”
Williams’ Brooklyn/Roanoke project broke through with a self-titled debut in 2024, recorded with Lightning Bug’s Kevin Copeland and released, like this one, on Western Vinyl. The new album, which the band calls creek-steeped folk, arrives October 23rd.
“Clover” moves at a foggy pace, twangy guitar and steel guitar sitting under Williams’ vocal, with Carolina Chauffe adding backing vocals and Dane Hagen and Logan Miley filling out the rhythm section on drums, bass and synth. The lyrics circle around someone he’s lost touch with: an overgrown yard, a phone call that hasn’t come yet, patience worn thin. Williams has described it as “a song about grieving, but also one about presence.”
