TVOD – Rerun
Less than a year after Party Time, Brooklyn six-piece TVOD are already back with “Rerun”, the lead single from their sophomore album The Farm, due October 16 via Mothland and Get Better Records. The track arrives with an animated video directed by vocalist Tyler Wright, hand-drawn in Adobe After Effects: a delinquent dog hijacking a car, visiting a strip club, running from the police, driving off a cliff. It cost nothing and looks exactly right.
The song itself is driven by a locked-in bassline from Micaela Piccirillo, Serge Zbrizher and Denim Casimir trading angular guitar parts, and Wright’s vocals pushed somewhere between deadpan and desperate. The band’s own description is challenging to improve on: “reasons for desperately needing to quit your day job, move away from your hometown, and start a fresh self-destructive spiral.” What I notice is how the track channels that feeling without tipping into self-pity. It’s too fast and too funny for that.
The Farm was recorded at Nave Studios in Leeds with Danny Blackburn of Adult DVD, written partly on an actual farm in Neufchâtel-en-Bray, France. The album draws a straight line to Orwell’s Animal Farm and its central commandment about equality, pointing it at collapsing social contracts, hollow authority, and the fantasy of escaping a rotten system only to find the rot arrived before you. TVOD have always worked this territory with humour intact, which is the only way to do it without becoming a lecture.
