Cornelius & Sean Ono Lennon – Aeons
Cornelius, the Japanese composer and producer born Keigo Oyamada, has announced Refractions, his eighth original album and debut on the Eat Your Own Ears label, due August 19. Leading it out is “Aeons”, a collaboration with Sean Ono Lennon, who wrote the lyrics and sings. The two have history: Ono Lennon previously invited Oyamada to join an iteration of the Plastic Ono Band, and the rapport shows.
“Aeons” is built on a tight, locked groove, Lennon’s smooth vocal delivery floating over guitar and keyboard stabs in that precise, unhurried way Cornelius has been refining since Fantasma. The lyrics move through cosmological scale and personal doubt at once: parsecs and patterns persisting, the world on your shoulders, the universe inside your head. Oyamada describes his approach as structural rather than purely conceptual, “exploring continuity, transformation, and multiple coexisting states within a single, uninterrupted flow of time.” That’s an accurate description of how the track actually feels.
Refractions features a thoughtfully assembled guest list: Arto Lindsay, who appeared on earlier Cornelius tracks “Bad Advice” and “Mind Train”; former Yura Yura Teikoku guitarist Shintaro Sakamoto; and Bid from the British punk band the Monochrome Set. Ten songs total, including the previously released singles “Mind Train”, “Bad Advice”, and “Yume Nemi”. It’s a genuinely interesting combination of collaborators for a record that, if “Aeons” is any indication, is going to reward careful listening.
