Tricky – Out of Place (feat. Marta)

Six years after “Fall to Pieces”, Tricky is back under his own name. “Out of Place” is the first single from “Different When It’s Silent”, his 15th studio album, due July 17 on False Idols. The track features Marta Złakowska, who has been his main collaborator for several years now, most recently on last year’s joint record “Out the Way”. He originally wrote “Out of Place” for her project, then pulled it back for this album.

The song runs on the contrast between the two voices: Marta’s restrained delivery sitting against Tricky’s frayed, almost punk-like performance. Frenetic drum patterns and mournful strings build underneath it. The album itself was recorded between his home in France and sessions in Bristol, and Bristol singer Mitch Sanders, whose soulful falsetto runs through much of the record, is central to the sound. Also contributing is Bristol rapper Red Run Rambo, who appeared on the 2024 Theis Thaws album.

The sessions that became “Different When It’s Silent” were not originally intended as a Tricky album at all. “In my mind it was another side project”, he says. It was his manager Alan McGee who heard the material and pushed back. McGee’s read: “Mate, this is a Tricky album. This is the best thing since Maxinquaye. This has got to be a Tricky album”. Across fourteen tracks, the album combines skeletal blues, brooding electronics, distorted guitars and stripped-down hip-hop rhythms. The video for “Out of Place”, directed by Steve Gullick, layers faces and figures in superimposed cuts that match the song’s restless energy.

What caught my ear is how the track closes rather than opens the album — it functions as a finale, not a setup, which is an unusual choice for a lead single and gives it a different kind of weight. This is a proper return, and it earns the attention.
