Bonobo – Talk to Me (feat. Nicole Miglis)
The choral “ooh”s & “ahh”s at the beginning of “Talk to Me” are live. They were recorded by Bonobo using his cell phone while he interrupted Nicole Miglis in the middle of vocal warm-up to join in with her. Tour manager yells in the background saying they’re out of time.
The track is the fifth single from Distance in Static, Bonobo’s eighth album, out September 11th on Ninja Tune, following Me and You (W24), Drift (W28) and Always on Your Side (W32). It’s also one of the oldest songs in the batch: the demo dates back to right after Fragments, and an early version turned up in Green’s 2023 Boiler Room set from DGTL Amsterdam before it was finished off, years later, in a Milan hotel room and on the tour bus.
Miglis formerly of Hundred Waters, adds soulful vocal melodies which are often used as building blocks for Bonobos’ track arrangements. This particular single is given the time to develop with a relaxed feel, allowing the listener to absorb the atmospheric elements for an extended period prior to the introduction of percussion. Green states that “talk to me” existed in demo form for a few years before finding a home, and i believe that feeling of being patient is present throughout the finished product as well. The song does not feel like it was made to rush towards something.
Bonobo will release a new tour in collaboration with Pierre Claude on distance in static this fall. A five-track single series will precede Bonobos’ collaborative record. “Talk to me” appears to be the most intimate/quietest addition to date within that collection.
