Blue Bendy – Vocal Fry Academia
Blue Bendy have written a song that pokes fun at how short their hype might last. “Vocal Fry Academia” pictures the scene named after them as already buried, a handful of microtrends back, while its narrator keeps scrolling, keeps liking, and quietly hopes to be known around New York anyway. It ends on a firing squad armed with nerf guns, which tells you how seriously they want to be taken.
The music opens as an elegant, articulate ballad and keeps building until it tips over into a swirl of hyperpop, and the London sextet never sit in one mode for long. Arthur Nolan says it’s the first song he ever wrote starting from the title and working backwards, and he sums up the result as “isolated parasocial self-loathing and performative vanity.” He sounds like he’s enjoying himself.
It’s the second single from “One Day This Will All Be Lore”, the nine-track follow-up to 2024’s “So Medieval”, after September’s “Dragonslayer”. The album is out January 29 on Practise Music, and the band play three UK headline shows in March.
