Sleaford Mods feat. Sue Tompkins – Cato
“I thought the song was very catchy, and throbby!” Sue Tompkins says of “Cato”, and that’s the plain truth of it. Jason Williamson built it out of memories of the 70s Pink Panther films, watched as a kid in flares in front of a big wooden telly. Tompkins plays Cato, Clouseau’s manservant forever lying in wait to ambush him, as anxiety in human form: wound tight, hiding, ready to spring. The two of them trade lines back and forth like a duet over Andrew Fearn’s relentless, throbbing beat.
Recorded in Nottingham about a month after “No Touch”, it came too late for “The Demise Of Planet X” and now leads the album’s expanded edition, nine extra tracks out now on Rough Trade. Tompkins directed the video as well, and Williamson reckons she could join the band.
