June McDoom – Human Angel

“Human Angel” started as a plain folk song and turned into one of June McDoom’s first real crossings of folk and reggae. It opens on fingerpicking and the sound of wind howling, then the drums arrive with dub in their bones, jerky and syncopated, with fills that wouldn’t be out of place on a breakbeat record. Harp threads through the whole thing, synths add a little glow, and her voice floats above it all without ever hurrying.

She grew up with her father’s sound systems thudding through the bedroom floor while she listened to folk records upstairs, so the meeting point was always going to be somewhere around here. It’s the last single before her debut album “Follow the Light”, out October 16 on Jagjaguwar, and that record is going to be one of our albums of the month. Folk and dub have rarely sat this comfortably together.
