Gwenifer Raymond – Bird Songs For Atomic Skies
Lyrebirds nesting in fallout with heads they didn’t have yesterday, foxes in the dark whose barks come out wrong: that’s the scene Gwenifer Raymond sets for “Bird Songs For Atomic Skies”, which she calls “a mutant rag, a blues gone awry.” No words needed. It’s all fast, knotted finger-picking on a single guitar, the Mississippi blues and John Fahey shapes she’s always worked from bent slightly out of true, raucous and a little unhinged. It’s her first new music since “Last Night I Heard the Dog Star Bark” and her first for Fat Possum. How does one guitar make this much noise about the end of the world?
