Porchlight – Topsoil
Somewhere on a narrow ledge between standing still and moving on, Porchlight’s “Topsoil” keeps its balance and won’t settle. The lyric stacks up images of that in-between state: footing so thin that stopping means rusting, a snake waiting at the threshold to pick off anyone who kneels for certainty, a stall at the junction that ends in a choke and a collapse. The false comfort of rocking back and forth on the spot. Then the static builds, hair rising, knees giving way, a plea for the storm to finally break, before the lights drop and the only advice left is to keep your eyes level and trust the air. What it’s after is that thin surface layer where new things push through, and the nerve it takes to cross it lightly. All nerve, no certainty, and better for it.
