Ex:Re – Radio Station
An endless California road trip, radio flipping between stations that never quite settle: that’s the scene “Radio Station” sets, opening on strummed acoustic guitar before fluttering synths and layered guitar take over. It’s the first single from Ex:Re’s upcoming “Save As”, Elena Tonra’s second album under the name since her 2018 debut, due 30 October on 4AD.
Tonra calls the shifting dial a stand-in for how her mind works, “the push and pull of different feelings,” stuck between decisions. That restlessness shows up in details like ordering someone’s coffee and burning through shared money, small domestic images standing in for something bigger. Fabian Prynn, who produced Tonra’s 2018 debut, is back behind the desk, joined by Josephine Stephenson on cello, Hinako Omori on synths, Ben Reed on bass and Jethro Fox on electric guitar.
