ladylike – Borrowed Time

Ladylike’s first new music since their folk EP earlier this year doesn’t rush to reintroduce itself; “Borrowed Time” is out now via Heist or Hit, cut live in a converted chapel in Pembrokeshire, Wales, with producer Balázs Altsach (Ugly, Orchestra (For Now)), the whole band tracking together over a fast three-week stretch. It moves the way slowcore does: folk guitar surging then dropping back to something quieter, Georgia Butler’s vocals almost swallowed by the room.

Its lyrics circle a relationship worn down by distance and repetition, more resigned than dramatic about it, someone asking if the other’s home and not quite getting an answer. Butler has said it’s about losing touch with someone whose life drifted separate from hers, never quite lining back up. I like that it doesn’t try to resolve that ache, just sits inside it. Doesn’t need to raise its voice to leave a mark.
