Aluminum – Killing Time
The sound of their last couple of years has been amping up, not dialing back. “Killing Time” is the first single off their second album, titled Iconoclast HaHa, which will be released by Felte Records on Oct. 30. Their first release was fully beat in 2024. Where the previous album was recorded by themselves, Iconoclast HaHa was recorded as a full-band performance, by Jack Shirley for 5 days at Atomic Garden Studio in Oakland, California.
The song itself supports that notion. Marc Leyda and Ryann Gonsalves alternate vocal calls & responses while trading guitar parts that are both fuzzy and clean. The drumming on the track provides motion but does so in a way that keeps everything sounding energetic. Leyda stated that their goal was to create a heavier, more guitar-driven record using a Marshall stack to give it a punkier quality and to allow for a larger live presence. Gonsalves wrote “Killing Time” about feeling exhausted from constantly trying to measure up but never doing so, whether she felt she wasn’t good enough, or that she was too much. Her delivery during the song conveys that sense of frustration/sneering, and she doesn’t need to explain anything further.
It has been two years since they have put out a full-length record and instead of becoming quieter, they’ve become louder.
