Julia Holter – Materia 2

Julia Holter has written “Materia” before on her 2024 album Something In The Room She Moves, with just her voice and shimmering Wurlitzer working together almost monophonically. This rendition of “Materia”, titled “Materia 2” is what occurs when she takes apart this same song using fundamentally different elements and then reconstructs them. The build-up will be the last item she releases before her next full-length album entitled Materia set for release via Domino Records August 21, following My Lost One (W31).

A rebuild featuring drums machines, fretless bass by Devra Hoff and clarinet by Chris Speed has Holter’s voice swirling with experimental vocalist Jessika Kenney instead of solo as was done previously. The lyrics have also been modified, Holter has re-explored the relationship of spirit and body and love and blood; she has transformed the surreal imagery used in the original into something new instead of duplicating those images. As well, there will be a third version, “Materia 3”; “Materia 3” will slow down the original Something take down and tuck it away as a hidden bonus track paying homage to the cd era.
