1000 Rabbits – Stupid Boy
A summer on the road changed how 1000 Rabbits play. Sold-out headline shows in London, Berlin, Glasgow, Cologne and Rotterdam, plus The Great Escape, Latitude, Reeperbahn and C2C, pushed the London five-piece into things they’d never tried on stage: singing together, getting into the crowd, dancing and shouting. “Stupid Boy” is the song that asked for all of it, and the first new music since their debut EP “Are We Friends Yet?”, which collected Virgin Soil (W08) and “Rubik’s Cube“.
It starts tight and careful. River’s vocal lines sit on a playful bass synth from Liv, with Paolo’s guitar and Luke’s drums keeping it small, and then it keeps building until it breaks open. Laura’s violin is what makes the peaks land, cutting in each time the song climbs. The band call it one of their angriest experiments and say “it could explode at any moment”, which is about right: the restraint in the first half is what gives the end its force.
Out now on Young, it premiered on Huw Stephens’ 6 Music show. “Are We Friends Yet?” is already one of my favourite records of 2026, and every new release makes me fall a bit harder for this band. No band has surprised me more this year.
