Tune-Yards – The Ones
Solidarity, on “The Ones”, starts with a confession. Merrill Garbus counts off her failures like a nursery rhyme, one, two, three. Each number another time she let someone down or passed up the chance to treat them as family, with more than a whiff of Peter’s three denials about it. Before widening the count to everyone shut out and every split along the way. Then she hands the next round to the listener, and the chorus asks for the strength to stick with the people who stuck around. A standalone on 4AD, ahead of their North American tour.
