Death Valley Girls – How Losing Everything in the Fire Taught Me to Love Myself
Death Valley Girls saved the heaviest title on Welcome To Earth for the last single, and the song carries every word of it. Bonnie Bloomgarden lost her Altadena home in the Eaton Fire, and “How Losing Everything in the Fire Taught Me to Love Myself” is about what came next: a lifetime spent chasing “normal”, assuming everyone else had a worth she still had to earn, then the fire burning all of that away until feeling safe as she already was became the only option left. Fuzzed-out psych guitars, Sarah Safaie’s sax and a crowd of voices singing in unison push it to a loud, commanding peak that sounds like someone getting back on her feet. Dylan Mars Greenberg shot the video with old-school in-camera projection, Bloomgarden flying alone through the sky until she finds company up there, her eye makeup by Glitter Macabre drawn like wings.
It follows Message From the Venus Flower (W33) and Basic Witch (W36), and Welcome To Earth lands this Friday, October 9, on Suicide Squeeze Records.
