Alex Burey – Chocolate
Low, slow, and over too soon. Worth the repeat. Every part of “Chocolate” went through a pitch shifter and came out lower, so the whole song sits a shade thicker and slower than it was played. Alex Burey built it in his own studio over a few short sessions, and nothing on it sounds overworked: soft, unhurried drums, warm saxophone, a close and tender vocal. Burey says it’s about intimacy, and the mix agrees, everything pulled in near. Best moment: a pitched sax line that climbs while a second one runs parallel underneath, a harmony he credits to Earth, Wind & Fire’s “Dreams”. His brother Mikey made the visualiser. Out now on Domino, and the song lands on the Half-Light EP with “Unspoken” and two untitled demos, released exclusively through Rough Trade on November 13.
