ĠENN – Jaguar Sun (feat. Aidan Moffat)
Aidan Moffat recorded his part on a laptop in an empty studio room while the new Arab Strap album was being mixed next door. Janelle Borg’s guitar drifts over Sofia Rosa Cooper’s kick, Leanne Zammit’s bass pushes in underneath, and the groove holds for more than six minutes. Leona Farrugia starts close to the mic, barely above a whisper, then opens up into full voice. She heard Moffat’s gravel in the song from the first jam, and she was right to.
Farrugia’s lyric circles the feeling of watching your life from a distance, the lead in a story that seems to be playing out without you. Moffat’s spoken passages tie it to Einstein’s block universe, where past and future already exist and free will starts to look shaky. The title comes from Italo Calvino’s unfinished Under the Jaguar Sun. ĠENN co-produced it with Johnny Hostile, Johnny Breakwell and Tom Hill, and it’s out now on Mogwai’s Rock Action Records, with a 12-inch available to pre-order. Their best song yet, and Moffat is only half the reason.
