Ezra Collective – Jubilee Feeling
Femi Koleoso did not choose the term “Jubilee” randomly. The song title is also that of a local church where he was raised, his current youth group and, in essence, “the year in which all debt is forgiven, and every prisoner is freed”. Thus, the concept for “Jubilee Feeling”, the third release off Here Because of Hope on September 11th via Partisan Records and the last instalment of the three part journey within this album; began in West Africa with Pa Salieu on Only Love (W22) followed to the Caribbean with Lila Iké on Well Organised (W28) and finally arrives in London.
The song is also the first fully instrumental on the album. There isn’t a “verse” or anything like that; the five members of the band just create a groove that expands beneath Joe Armon-Jones’s piano. This is how the group described this part of their work: “UK funky and breakbeat and bebop/jazz phrasing together, and the feel of a rave where the music being played is actually jazz”.
What I find interesting about this track is that, after the previous tracks that had another person singing lead vocals, they have decided to make this track their most emotionally charged piece, and yet it has literally nothing to say. Ebenezer Blanche directed the video which was shot in London. The video splits visually into parts of old-school club night vibes, and some things that seem more modern. On Sept. 16th at the Roundhouse, the group will celebrate the release of their new album by playing it through in entirety. Before embarking on a tour that spans over 2 years across Australia, North America, and a large leg across the UK, Ireland, and Europe. The tour ends in March. 2027.
