Sorry – Tom Will Smack Your Ass
Sorry followed a wistful song about lost youth with a song about a man named Tom who drives a Fiat. “Tom Will Smack Your Ass” is out now on Domino, arriving a few months after the “Billy Elliot” / “Alone in Cologne” double A-side and just days before the band’s set at Green Man Festival. It’s a lot funnier than either of those.
Tom is an archetype that many have encountered within the U.K. and in various ways. In creating the song, Sorry built the track around Tom’s habits, instead of telling a story about one particular individual. The track lists several things Tom does. He will get you drunk on expensive wine while at his aunt’s country home. He will play Thom Yorke B sides for you, drive his Fiat, and follow up with the title of the track by slapping your rear end before the night ending. The track features a lively piano riff with fuzzy bass and all vocals are delivered by Asha Lorenz in a completely straight forward manner that adds weight to the comedic tone of the track.
The video, created by Flasha Prod (Asha Lorenz & Flo Webb) consists of a compilation of fan submissions featuring individuals slapping their backsides. As serious as possible, this represents probably the least serious music video creation to date. “We did not harm any bums during filming,” states Lorenz. I believe Sorry has never approached being so silly as this in any track previously released and it works well for them.
