Blonde Redhead – Blood Spilled

Blonde Redhead are back with “Blood Spilled”, their first original song in three years, out now on section1. The New York trio of Kazu Makino and twin brothers Simone and Amedeo Pace follow 2023’s Sit Down For Dinner and its 2025 reinterpretation with the Brooklyn Youth Chorus, The Shadow Of The Guest, with something more direct and more raw. They wrote and produced it themselves, recording at Thump Studios in New York, and the single arrives with a photograph taken in a hospital ward after a horse-riding accident brought them back together.

The song takes its time. It opens quietly with Makino’s fragile, echo-laced vocal, then keeps adding weight, layer after layer, until the noise guitar the band built their name on in the early ’90s comes back to the surface. The whole thing bursts open across its six minutes. There’s no traditional verse-chorus scaffolding here, just a long propulsive build toward release. Makino has described “Blood Spilled” as a meditation on death written through a stretch of relentless loss, and the lyric bears that out: it addresses someone gone, casting them as both shelter and natural disaster, and turns the leaving into something besides an ending. The recurring line about time, pain and joy is the thesis, the insistence on owning the here and now, the body, right down to each cell, while it’s still ours to own.
