Melaina Kol – Idola
“Idola” is the third single from “Okay that’s a great idea because if I do that then”, out August 14 on Julia’s War Recordings, and it drops the guitar and electronics that used to anchor his sound. Cello, piano and acoustic guitar carry the track instead, all recorded plain and close, no reverb smoothing anything out.
The vocals are pieced together rather than sung straight through. Hornyak sampled a feature from Olivia O of Lowertown on the title track and used those fragments to build texture across much of the record, and you can hear that approach here too: words surface, break apart, come back changed. It gives the song a slightly unsteady feel even as the instrumentation stays calm and precise.
Lyrically, it’s about the fear that comes with long-term love, the worry you’ll let someone down just by being yourself over time. “Idola” is one of the more lyrical songs on the album, Hornyak says, centered on “fearing constantly disappointing them as a response to what you think love should actually feel.” Lines like “no use getting old” and “as someone sedated” sit against that idea of growing old together, more resigned than romantic.
I didn’t expect a song built on cello and piano to feel this unsettled. The instruments are gentle, but the vocal fragments keep pulling the mood sideways, and that tension is what makes “Idola” stick.
