Chad Hugo – Jumpupw!nya Ft. Tierra Whack, Leikeli47

Chad Hugo spent decades as the guy behind the boards, letting Pharrell take the spotlight while he built the actual sound. Now, at 52, he’s put his name on a lead single for the first time ever. “Jumpupw!nya” drops on his own label, Galaxie Records, and pairs him with Tierra Whack and Leikeli47 for a track that clocks in under two minutes and doesn’t waste a second of it.

Production-wise, this is Hugo doing what he’s always done best: pulsing rhythms that snap to a stop without warning, synths that swirl in and drop out, that same minimal clatter that made “Grindin'” and “Drop It Like It’s Hot” so distinctive. Leikeli47 opens things up, riding the beat hard: “Gangsters and the bourgeois, I make ’em all dance.” Whack follows with her usual left-field imagery, Crash Bandicoot references and all, matching Hugo’s chaos with her own. The two verses feel like they’re racing each other, and Hugo’s beat lets them.

Leikeli47’s connection to this session runs deeper than just a feature credit. Brooklyn-raised but with Virginia roots like Hugo himself, she said yes the second he called: “So when Chad called, I leapt at the opportunity to collaborate.” That Virginia thread, Hugo’s home turf, ties the whole thing together even as Whack’s Philly energy pulls it somewhere else entirely. I didn’t expect a track this short to feel so complete, but there’s no dead air here, no filler verse. Everything on “Jumpupw!nya” earns its spot.

It’s a confident way to start a new chapter, and honestly it makes me want to hear what else Hugo’s got sitting on the shelf after all these years behind other people’s names.
