Ibibio Sound Machine – Return to Sender

Ibibio Sound Machine are back. A few years after Pull The Rope, the London afro-electronic collective led by Eno Williams returns with “Return to Sender” .

The track grew from a genuinely frightening moment: Williams felt the steering wheel jerk out of her hands while driving, which she later read through the lens of traditional Nigerian belief. “Reflecting on this afterwards, it felt, from the perspective of traditional Nigerian thinking, to be a spiritual attack by unseen forces,” she explains. “The phrase ‘return to sender’ is a common response to such an event, invoking the rejection of any evil spirits that may have been looking to cause harm.” What could have stayed private has become something harder to pin down — part personal defiance, part reflection on a wider feeling of things being out of control.

The band’s full lineup is all over this, fourteen credited musicians building a groove that earns its size. Max Grunhard produced, recorded, and mixed at Vanguard Studios London, with additional mixing from Matthew Polly and Paolo Germano, and mastering by Dick Beetham at 360 Mastering. The rhythm section pushes, the horns lock in, and Williams’ voice sits right at the center without overshadowing the surrounding band. The track manages to stay energized all the way through without ever lurching into chao, Grunhard’s production keeps everything in motion while holding the tension just underneath.

The band is calling this a first glimpse of new music, building on a recent shift toward something more club-focused and immediate. Whether that becomes an album soon remains to be seen. In the meantime, there’s a full run of UK and Ireland dates this autumn, plus several summer festival appearances. It’s a strong return, and a reminder that Ibibio Sound Machine are one of the few bands currently making this kind of music with any real conviction.
