Man/Woman/Chainsaw – Nosedive
London six-piece Man/Woman/Chainsaw have announced their debut album Cannonball, out August 7 via Fiction Records, and shared its lead single โNosediveโ. The band signed to Fiction at the end of 2025 following the release of โOnly Girlโ, which opened the album. Both tracks were produced by Seth Evans (Geordie Greep, Black Midi) and Margo Broom (Fat White Family, Big Joanie), who handled the entire LP, recorded at RAK Studios.
โNosediveโ runs nearly six minutes. It’s built on two chords and a bouncing synth pattern that draws more from LCD Soundsystem dance-punk than from the band’s earlier art-punk material, with strings entering as the track builds toward its climax. Singer and keyboardist Emmie-Mae Avery describes it as โa song about longing for both comfort and freedom simultaneously in a relationship through the metaphor of being an injured bird needing shelter. We turned it into a danceable upbeat track, which made the tone shift throughout the song as though you find a way to pick yourself up and fly away.โ Drummer Lola Cherry frames the album’s intent more bluntly: โWe were talking about having a whole record of bangers, having everything be really in your face.โ
What the track does well is hold that tension for most of its runtime, instead of unraveling it too quickly. The chorus refrain locks in and doesn’t let go, which is where the LCD comparison earns its keep. I wasn’t expecting a debut single to be this patient with its build.
Man/Woman/Chainsaw formed when the members were 16, writing in a converted vicarage. By 2025 they had sold out two UK tours including a night at London’s Scala, played BBC 6 Music and KEXP sessions, and debuted at SXSW.
