Tori Amos – Gasoline Girls

Tori Amos releases “Gasoline Girls”, the third single from her upcoming eighteenth studio album In Times of Dragons, out 1 May via Universal/Fontana. The track follows “Stronger Together” and “Shush”, and adds another chapter to the album’s allegorical narrative. Written and produced by Amos, it features Mark Hawley on guitar, Matt Chamberlain on drums, and Jon Evans on bass.

In Times of Dragons is a concept album built around a fictionalised version of Amos fleeing a corrupt billionaire husband — the “lizard demon” of the story’s political subtext — across a mythologised American landscape. “Gasoline Girls” marks a turning point in that journey: the protagonist encounters a lesbian motorcycle gang who take her in, their rallying cry being “we will tend the fire”. Within the album’s framework they stand for solidarity, visibility, and collective resistance against the forces pursuing her. Amos frames the album broadly as a metaphor for the fight of democracy against tyranny, its fictional architecture a way of addressing the current political moment without flinching.

The song’s meaning extends beyond the narrative, though. Amos describes it as a meditation on transformation in all its forms: the shift from girlhood to womanhood, changes in gender identity or belief, the physical and psychological transitions that come with pregnancy, motherhood, and menopause. The concept of leaving one version of yourself behind runs through the lyric, and the gang’s arrival in the story mirrors that — a moment when something new begins to form. The piano sits at the centre of it, as it almost always does with Amos, and the track holds its emotional weight without reaching for the dramatic payoff the narrative might otherwise demand. That restraint is what makes it work.

In Times of Dragons is Amos’s first album since 2025’s The Music of Tori and the Muses and her most conceptually ambitious in years. To support it, she is currently on her most extensive tour in over a decade, with UK and European dates running through May and a North American leg from 7 July to 2 September.
