The Moonlandingz – It’s Where I’m From (ft. Iggy Pop)
Fifteen years ago, Adrian Flanagan broke both his arms and, instead of taking up something sensible like knitting, decided to record music in a Morphine-induced fog using one finger and a thumb. “It’s Where I’m From” was the first piece of that stubborn creativity, left to rot in a cupboard until The Moonlandingz, halfway through recording No Rocket Required, decided it might still have a pulse.
The bones of the original demo survived: a drum machine, a battered mellotron, and Flanagan’s initial vocals. Add Oliver Harrap’s live drumming, Alex White’s soulful sax and flute, and just a dash of existential despair — and voilà. Of course, they needed a voice that sounded like it had survived several apocalypses. Iggy Pop.
Iggy growls and aches through a slow, haunting arrangement that trades The Moonlandingz’ usual chaos for something far rawer. The production leans minimalist — sparse drums, hazy synths, and moments where you feel the silence more than the sound. Even the playful chaos they’re known for bows down to something heavier here: the simple horror of being alive long enough to miss what you’ve lost.
Against all odds (and medical advice), Flanagan’s one-finger anthem becomes the bruised heart of No Rocket Required. Proof that sometimes the best things come not from careful planning but from stubborn refusal to sit still — and maybe a little Morphine haze doesn’t hurt either.
