Marina Allen – Deep Fake

Marina Allen – Deep Fake

Marina Allen has shared “Deep Fake,” the latest single from her forthcoming album, Eight Pointed Star, set to release on June 7th via Fire Records. The song, born from a creative prompt in a workshop led by Chris Weisman, merges two different pieces into a cohesive exploration of unsettling societal issues. Allen’s haunting voice navigates themes of femininity, patriarchal barriers, and the complex layers of our culture.

The production of “Deep Fake” is both intricate and raw, featuring a blend of acoustic elements and subtle electronic touches. Allen’s delivery feels intimate, as though she’s conversing directly with the listener, bringing a personal yet universal touch to the track. Her lyrical approach confronts and acknowledges the realities of these societal constructs while treating them as sacred.

The music video, directed by Callie Hernandez, adds a surreal layer to the song’s narrative. Using deepfake technology, Hernandez superimposes Allen’s face onto various women’s faces from archival footage, creating a visual commentary on identity and reality. The latter part of the video, shot on a glitchy DV camera, intentionally blurs the line between the real and the unreal, amplifying the song’s themes.

Allen reflects on the song’s creation: “’Deep Fake’ felt like a little revelation. It spun from this writing workshop I took, led by Chris Weisman. I wanted the first part to feel very personal, like talking to someone you love, while also naming the complicated things that make up our culture. Recognizing them as reality but confronting them as sacred.”

The single and its video are a powerful introduction to Eight Pointed Star, promising an album that tackles profound themes with creativity and sensitivity. Marina Allen’s ability to blend personal vulnerability with broader societal commentary marks her as a distinctive voice in the contemporary music landscape.
