Mike D – What We Got

Michael Diamond, aka Mike D of the Beastie Boys, released “Switch Up” earlier in May, the first new music from any Beastie Boy in 15 years. “What We Got” is the second, arriving weeks later and confirming this is not a one-off. Both tracks come from experimental sessions with his sons Davis and Skyler Diamond, whose own project Very Nice Person has been building a following in indie circles, alongside musicians Jason Lader, Benjamin Pacheco, Kevin Rhomberg, Carter Lang and Tyran Donaldson. “What We Got” was produced by Lang and Donaldson and mixed by Derek “MixedByAli” Ali at No Name Studios.

The production is heavier and more straightforward than “Switch Up”: distorted guitars, boom-bap drums, and Mike D’s delivery riding through on slap-back echo before the track swerves into something more spacious and dreamy at the end. The lyrics are direct about what’s happening: “20 years later, good to go solo” and “you think it’s over, but you haven’t even met me.” That’s not nostalgia; it reads more like a statement of intent from someone who spent a decade and a half in quieter mode and has found something worth returning for. I wasn’t expecting to hear new Mike D music in 2026, but here we are, and it sounds like a beginning rather than a coda.
