Liars – Beat Creep Some Eyes

How long does it take for something ridiculous to feel normal? Angus Andrew’s answer is not very long at all: “after a while, it just becomes Tuesday.” He spent his time in Kalamazoo, Michigan breathing pollutants from a local packaging factory and fighting to hold it to account and “Beat Creep Some Eyes” sounds like the moment you stop noticing the smell.

Where Ice Pick, Kalamazoo (W37) drove hard on synths and relentless drums, the second single from “A Ban On Plastic Bag Bans” hangs back. Long synth drones stretch out underneath, the drums tumble forward in a cascade that never quite settles into a groove, and Andrew delivers his lines in a flat, steady recitation, closer to an incantation than a vocal melody. It’s glitchy without being busy, and oddly calming for a song about things going wrong.

Liars has been Andrew’s project for about a decade now. He made the album between the US and Australia, where he now lives, with jazz drummer Laurence Pike and multi-instrumentalist Cameron Deyell, both back from 2021’s “The Apple Drop”. It sits seventh of eleven tracks on the record, out March 5, 2027 on Mute.
