Dead Man’s Bones – Lost In The Night
Two guitars, two drum machines, two synths, a farm outside Los Angeles and a single day: that’s how Ryan Gosling and Zach Shields made “Lost in the Night”, the first Dead Man’s Bones song in 17 years, after a run of LA studios couldn’t give them the sound they were after. The farm made it onto the recording, with crickets and frogs going under the whole thing. Tim Anderson, who produced the 2009 debut, is back, but the children’s choir isn’t. Now it’s a plain synth backbeat, sparse guitar lines with Springsteen and Suicide in their bones, and Gosling’s voice pushed so deep into the echo that it seems to come from the next field over. Underneath the goth trappings sits a straight love song, a promise to keep searching through the dark until the other person turns up. Out now on Anti- Records, with more promised soon.
