Do Nothing – Smile
An unconventional bassline, groovy and slightly off-kilter, carries all five minutes of “Smile”, and it makes the song far easier to move to than its subject should allow. Chris Bailey drew on the sprawling, clumsily drawn comic of an online artist who lived with schizophrenia and died by suicide, a work built around a puzzle book nobody could solve. The refrain sounds like relief at finally being left alone, and sung over that groove it ends up as company for anyone who feels on the outside.
The Nottingham four-piece’s third preview of second album Friend World, out November 6 on Submarine Cat Records, after Act Natural (W31).
