@ – Bird
A looping acoustic guitar, a warm clarinet passage and mellow group harmonies are all “Bird” needs. Philadelphia duo @, pronounced “at”, keep the arrangement sparse and let the words do the unsettling. The song started with dead baby birds turning up on Stone Filipczak’s deck and was written on a bike ride through Druid Hill Park in Baltimore.
The lyric keeps circling that image: a decomposing baby bird in the doorway that deserved a funeral, a narrator putting themselves at God’s mercy, bleak lines delivered so casually they sting. Filipczak says the puns are there on purpose: “The lyrics have lots of puns which hopefully offset their hopelessness.” The jokes land and the hopelessness stays anyway. Caity Arthur’s video, shot on digital and analog film, puts Filipczak and Victoria Rose through special-effects makeup and choreography, including a full-body transformation into a bird. “Bird” is the third single from “Autosmile”, the duo’s first album for 4AD UK, out 16 October. Grim subject, gentle delivery, and a clarinet that keeps it from tipping either way. Hard to shake.
