Ghost Funk Orchestra – Yours

The Hammond Organ on “Yours” isn’t sitting patiently waiting for it’s time to shine. Rather, it starts off the song, creates the atmosphere – a mix of psychedelic and unsettling – and continues to loop throughout the entire song. In fact, the Hammond Organ is one of the last things standing when the song comes to an end. Seth Applebaum began building Ghost Funk Orchestra (which was originally a solo act) into an 8 piece ensemble. After listening to the music of Ed Lincoln and Dick Hyman, he created “Yours”.

This influence can be heard in the arrangement; playful, slightly theatrical, brass swells during the chorus, but are slightly distorted. Additionally, this is the first Ghost Funk Orchestra studio record that features Camillia Hartman on lead vocals. She is part of what makes “Yours” such a success. Applebaum describes “Yours” as “a little bluesy tune about a suspicious lover.” This description somewhat downplays the amount of tension in the lyrics. The individual being sung about will only allow herself to fall under her lover’s control after she determines if the person she is singing about is trustworthy.
